January 2009 Meeting

The Irish Poet’s Place in Irish History

Eric Falci, Ph.D.

Friday, January 30, 2009, 7:30 p.m.

UCSF Laurel Heights Conference Center

3333 California Street (near Presidio Avenue), San Francisco

The Irish Literary & Historical Society is pleased to present Eric Falci, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley as guest speaker at our meeting on Friday evening, January 30, 2009 at 7:30 p.m

The place of Irish poets in Irish history is unique, being, as Professor Falci contends, “both crucial and crucially complicated.”  Looking at poets and poems from the eighth century to the present, he will discuss the historical interconnections between Irish poetry and Irish politics and then focus more specifically on the place of the poet in a globalized and globalizing Ireland.

Eric Falci received his Ph.D. in English from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.  A member of the faculty at UC Berkeley since 2006, he teaches courses on contemporary Irish literature, modern and contemporary literature, and poetry.  He is currently working on a book manuscript about Irish poetry since the 1970s, and has articles forthcoming on space and place in contemporary Irish and British poetry and issues of translation in Irish and Scottish Gaelic poetry.

Please join us on Friday, January 30th to welcome Eric Falci as our guest speaker.  The talk will be followed by a Q&A, a short business meeting, and a book raffle. Afterwards we will enjoy a social with coffee, tea, and traditional Irish breads.
